Welcome back to LLM Decode 👋

Latest AI developments show just how far the industry is stretching beyond the chatbot. Google is preparing to test whether serious AI compute can eventually move off Earth, while China’s livestream-commerce industry is testing whether AI-generated hosts can make selling products dramatically cheaper.

Here’s what matters today.

Google Is Taking AI Compute Into Space

Google’s Project Suncatcher is moving from research toward its first real orbital experiment. The company plans to launch a prototype satellite carrying Google TPUs to study how AI hardware handles the radiation, temperature extremes and physical stresses of operating in space.

The bigger vision is far more ambitious. Google is researching whether clusters of interconnected satellites could eventually provide scalable machine-learning infrastructure in orbit. In low Earth orbit, Google says satellites could access near-continuous sunlight and potentially generate up to eight times more solar power than comparable systems on Earth.

There are still major engineering challenges. AI hardware must survive radiation, cooling is harder without airflow, and future satellites would need extremely high-bandwidth laser connections to operate together. Google stresses that this first mission is an experiment, not an orbital data center.

Why it matters

  • AI’s bottleneck is becoming physical: Energy, cooling and data-center capacity increasingly determine how much AI can scale.

  • Space could offer another infrastructure layer: Abundant solar energy makes orbital compute an intriguing long-term possibility.

  • Distributed AI gets more ambitious: Future workloads could potentially run across interconnected compute systems rather than one traditional data center.

  • This is still early research: The upcoming test needs to prove that the underlying hardware can reliably operate in orbit before the bigger vision becomes realistic.

AI Hosts Could Cut Livestream-Commerce Costs by 80%

China’s enormous livestream-shopping industry is experimenting with AI-generated digital hosts as platforms and merchants look for cheaper ways to keep shopping streams running for longer periods. JD.com says AI hosts can reduce livestream operating costs by roughly 80% to 90%.

Instead of simply helping a human creator write scripts, these systems can take on parts of the presenter role itself. That potentially lets merchants operate livestream channels for longer hours without requiring a human host to remain on camera continuously.

But human creators aren’t disappearing yet. Top livestreamer Li Jiaqi argues that human hosts still provide emotional connection and trust that digital presenters struggle to reproduce. The emerging model may therefore be AI for scale, humans for influence and connection.

Why it matters

  • AI is moving from content creation to selling: Generative AI can increasingly participate directly in customer-facing commerce.

  • Always-on commerce becomes cheaper: Brands could potentially operate product demonstrations and sales streams around the clock.

  • Creators may shift toward higher-value interactions: AI can handle repetitive presentation while humans focus on community, credibility and major launches.

  • Cost isn't everything: A cheaper AI host only wins if customers actually trust it enough to buy.

4 AI Workflows to Try

  1. AI Infrastructure Audit: Map where your AI workloads run, how much compute they consume, and what they cost. As AI scales, infrastructure efficiency can become as important as model selection.

  2. AI Presenter Experiment: Take one existing product demo and create an AI-generated version. Compare production time, cost, engagement and conversions against the human-created version.

  3. Human + AI Commerce Test: Let AI handle repetitive product explanations and FAQs while humans handle recommendations, community interaction and high-value customer conversations.

  4. Always-On Content Test: Identify content that currently stops when your team goes offline. Test whether AI can safely extend that workflow across additional hours without sacrificing quality or brand consistency.
